Your habit data — logged actions, hearts, growth, keepsakes, and settings — is saved only on your device using standard on-device storage. It is never sent to us or anyone else, and it is removed if you delete the app. There is no account and no sign-in.
Because Bonsai is free, it shows ads through Google AdMob — an ad when you open the app, and optional “rewarded” ads you can choose to watch to revive a tree. To serve and measure these ads, Google may collect and process device information such as a mobile advertising identifier, IP address (and coarse location derived from it), device type, and ad interactions.
On iOS, personalized ads are shown only if you allow tracking when prompted (Apple’s App Tracking Transparency). If you decline, you’ll still see ads, but non-personalized ones. See how Google uses this data: Google Ads & Privacy and Google Privacy Policy.
Optional purchases — removing ads (monthly or lifetime) and instant tree revival — are billed by the Apple App Store or Google Play and managed for us by RevenueCat. RevenueCat receives a random app-user identifier and your purchase status so your purchase unlocks correctly (and restores on a new device). Your payment details go directly to Apple or Google — we never see or store your card information. See RevenueCat’s Privacy Policy.
Bonsai is single-player and account-free by default. If you choose to tend a shared tree with a friend (a “pact”), you sign in one of three ways:
There are never any passwords. We never use your email address for marketing, and we never sell or share it. If you would rather we held no email at all, use the anonymous option — everything in Partner Mode works the same way.
On our backend provider Supabase we store only what’s needed to keep you both in sync: your account identifier (plus an email address in the Google sign-in case above), the display name you type, the shared tree’s state, and which partner fed it and when. You can delete your account and all of its data at any time from within the app or by emailing us. Single-player never requires an account.
We never sell your data, never upload your single-player habit logs, and never verify or monitor what you do in real life. Outside of Partner Mode there are no accounts at all. The honesty in Bonsai is between you and yourself.
Bonsai is not directed to children under 13, and where required, ads are requested in a non-personalized mode.
If we change what data is involved, we’ll update this page and the “last updated” date above before the change ships.
